The United States Postal Service is commemorating the event with the issuance of a stamp.
Based on a painting by Thomas Blackshear and designed by Derry Noyes, the stamp is one of three in a Civil Rights series from the USPS
Detroiters will be able to participate in a formal unveiling ceremony at the Charles H. Wright museum, home of the largest collection of historical African American artifacts on Monday.
The Henry Ford Museum will also be hosting day long activities in honor of the occasion.
